'Shoo!': Bear Tries to Break Into Family's House in Mammoth Lakes, California

A bear attempted to break into a house in Mammoth Lakes, California, through the home’s window with the residents of the property inside, on July 1.

The video shows Christian Pondella, who captured the footage, coming face-to-face with the animal and trying to “shoo” it away from his home. Pondella was able to get the bear to leave his property.

Pondella told Storyful the bear has been visiting his neighborhood in Mammoth Lakes since spring and has visited his home at least three times.

“He is a 17-month-old bear who has been recently weaned from his mother so he is looking for easy food, " said Pondella. “He probably got food at some point at a house in our neighborhood so has kept returning looking for more.”

Pondella said bears and other wildlife are a common sight since he and his family live near mountains. He added that the bears are not aggressive towards humans but do occasionally roam through neighborhoods and campgrounds looking for food. Credit: Christian Pondella via Storyful
