The Spanish Institute of Oceanography has been monitoring the “effects of the eruption on the marine ecosystem” around La Palma, amid continued activity of the island’s Cumbre Vieja volcano.

The Ramon Margalef oceanographic ship arrived off the island on September 25, the state research agency said, and has continued its work since.

Footage here shows the ship as lava is seen erupting by night in the background.

Officials reported a fresh eruption at the Cumbre Vieja volcano in La Palma on the evening of Monday, September 27.

The Canary Islands Volcanology Institute (INVOLCAN) said an eruption took place at around 8 pm local time.

Copernicus EMS said satellite imagery showed 589 homes and 21 kilometers of roadway had been destroyed by volcanic activity by early Tuesday. Credit: Spanish Institute of Oceanography via Storyful
