Beaches around Sydney have been covered in thick sea foam after days of stormy weather and torrential downpours.

Giorgio De Maria recorded the phenomenon at Clovelly Beach. The National Ocean Service says the foam is formed when sea water churns causing dissolved salts, proteins, pollutants, detergents and other matter to foam.

Sea foam is usually not harmful to humans, but can be if algal blooms decay nearby.

The Sydney Morning Herald said police were advising people to stay out of the water, with a hazardous surf warning in place. Credit: Giorgio De Maria via Storyful
