President Joe Biden addressed the nation in the wake of the deadly mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, on May 24, saying it was time to stand up to the gun lobby.

“When in God’s name are we going to do what we all know in our gut needs to be done?” the president asked.

“These kinds of mass shootings rarely happen in other parts of the world. Why? They have mental health problems…Why do we keep letting this happen? Where in God’s name is our backbone?… It’s time to act."

Texas Governor Greg Abbott said at least 14 children and one teacher were killed in the May 24 shooting.

Abbott said the suspect, 18-year-old Salvador Ramos, a resident of Uvalde, was dead. “It’s believed that responding officers killed him,” he added.
