A snowstorm swept over California’s northern Sierra Nevada mountains overnight into Monday, October 18, dumping up to 4 inches of snow on the Tahoe Basin and up to 10 inches on elevated areas west of Lake Tahoe, the National Weather Service said.

The storm prompted the California Highway Patrol (CHP) in Truckee, north of Lake Tahoe, to temporarily close a 40-mile stretch of Interstate 80 between Truckee and Baxter due to “heavy snow and spin outs.” The freeway was reopened a few hours later with chain restrictions between Truckee and Nyack.

Chain restrictions were put into effect on roads across the Sierra and Tahoe Basin, the National Weather Service said. Motorists were urged to drive with caution.

The CHP in Truckee dropped all chain controls just after 10:30 am on Monday and tweeted: “That was a pretty wild ride for the first real storm of the year.” Credit: Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority via Storyful
