A small tornado caused damage to several homes, a school and other properties after touching down in the town of Cobden, next to Greymouth on the west coast of New Zealand’s South Island, early on Monday, February 6, according to local officials.

Mayor of Grey District Tania Gibson posted photos showing damage in the town and said residents in the worst-hit houses were “thankfully safe and unharmed.”

A roof covering a pool at Cobden School was left damaged after being “partially lifted” by the tornado, Gibson said.
