At least two people died and a third was injured after a small plane crashed into a wooded area close to Auburn Municipal Airport in California on Friday, January 24, officials said.

The Placer County Sheriff’s Office said three people were on board a non-commercial aircraft when it crashed east of the airport, near the Black Oak Golf Course. Fire officials said the crash occurred near the intersection of Dry Creek Road and Haines Road.

Both CalFire and the sheriff’s office said investigators with the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration had been notified and were en route to the scene. Credit: Placer County Sheriff’s Office via Storyful

Have you ever noticed that plane crashes get reported nationally, while any other type of vehicle accident does not? Would a car accident, even with 2 fatalities, even make headlines locally? Why is that?

Landed and took off the Auburn airport many times in several different types of aircraft. It could be a bit "squirrely" approaching from the east with a cross wind. Beautiful long runways without the foothill canyons to cause unstable air at Lincoln ten mile away.
