Ukraine Receives Military Shipments From UK as Russian Troops Gather on Border

Ukraine has received shipments of anti-armor weapons systems from the United Kingdom in response to what Defence Secretary Ben Wallace called the “legitimate and real cause for concern” posed by Russian forces.

Footage released by Ukrainian Military TV shows one shipment aboard an RAF C-17 transport plane being unloaded upon arrival in Ukraine.

Ukraine’s deputy defense minister, Anatolii Petrenko, said of the shipments: “Without doubt it will strengthen our forces and defence capabilities. And I want to stress that this aid will be used solely for defence purposes to protect our forces, critical infrastructure and civilians from any threats that may lead to the conflict escalation.”

Ben Wallace announced the shipments in a statement to the House of Commons on January 17. He said that the decision to send defensive weapons systems was taken in light of “increasingly threatening behaviour from Russia”. Wallace said “a small number of UK personnel will also provide early-stage training for a short period of time, within the framework of Operation ORBITAL, before then returning to the United Kingdom.” Credit: Ukraine Military TV via Storyful
