Ukrainians Grapple With Winter Weather in Russian-Occupied Mariupol

Ukrainians in Mariupol are grappling with their first winter under Russian occupation, in a city that is largely destroyed and lacks many basic services, including heat and water.

Petro Andriushchenko, adviser to the mayor of Mariupol, said in a Telegram post on Thursday morning that the roads were “a skating rink” in the morning.

“The morning greeted Mariupol with ice on the streets,” he wrote. “There is nothing and no one to sprinkle the roads.”

Mariupol City Council said residents “still don’t have normal living conditions” after months of Russian control of the city.

“Not only are they freezing in their own homes without heating, but they also cannot buy hot food,” the council said.
