Vehicles Swept Away as Deadly Flooding Hits Sicily

Torrents of floodwater swept away cars on the streets of Catania, Sicily, after the region was hit with flash flooding caused by fierce storms on October 26.

3BMeteo reported that up to 350 mm (13.8 inches) of rain fell in the province in the space of just 72 hours. The area’s typical annual rainfall is approximately 600 mm (23.6 inches), they said.

Footage taken by Giulia Paladino shows a car getting carried away by heavy flood currents along a busy commercial street in Catania, as floodwater seeped into the Flying Tiger store where she works.

Speaking to Storyful, Paladino said that an elderly couple were in the car but were luckily rescued by two policemen close by.
