For the first time in its 142-year history, women and girls took part in a torchlit procession at the Up Helly Aa fire festival on Scotland’s Shetland Islands on January 31, according to local reports.

Traditionally, women and girls were restricted to participating as hostesses, which involved organizing the all-night parties that take place in community halls across Lerwick, BBC News reported.

Crowds streamed onto the streets of Lerwick on Tuesday after the Viking-inspired event took a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic.
