The Royal New Zealand Air Force said one of its airplanes arrived to deliver aid to Tonga on January 20 following the eruption of a nearby volcano and subsequent tsunami that damaged infrastructure in the Pacific Island nation.

The Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Ha’apai volcano erupted on January 15, creating tsunami waves as high as 15 meters and causing the deaths of at least three people, Tonga’s government said. The disaster prompted the kingdom to announce a state of emergency, effective until at least February 13.

On January 21, the Consulate of the Kingdom of Tonga said communications had partially been restored.
