Hopium Machina Luxury Electric Supercar Has 620 Mile Range - Thanks To Hydrogen Cells. The Hopium Machina, the first car from Hopium, a French start-up, has an amazing 1000km (620-mile) range range thanks to combining electricity with hydrogen power. Hopium claims the €120,000 (£104,000) Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) will have a 1000km (620-mile) range and complete a refill in three minutes. The company was founded by Oliver Lombard, a racing driver who won the LMP2 category at Le Mans in 2011. Its first car stores hydrogen in long, cylindrical containers that run down the floor and central tunnel of the vehicle. These can be filled in just three minutes and fuel cells then send electricity to the batteries which run the Machina’s electric motors. The Machina can manage a 0-62mph sprint in less than 5.0sec, and can reach 143mph. Hopium’s plant will open in 2025, targeting production of around 20,000 cars per year.
