At least 16 people have died in six days of protests against income inequality across Chile, local media reported.

President Sebastián Pinera said he had received a clear message from the demonstrators and announced reforms aimed at ending the protests, a move deemed “insufficient” by opposition politicians.

The protests began in response to a proposed hike in subway fares but have since expanded to encompass anger over the cost of living and inequality in the country, according to reports. A state of emergency was declared on October 18.
