A team of eight firefighters in St Louis, Missouri, rescued a kitten trapped underneath an interstate overpass on Monday, July 27.

The animal shelter Stray Rescue of St Louis said they were alerted to the kitten by a passerby who could hear it crying underneath Interstate 64 west of Busch Stadium.

People from the shelter tried to rescue the kitten themselves before they called the St Louis Fire Department for help.

Footage released by the shelter shows firefighters using a cherry picker to reach the cat.

“They were just as dedicated to saving this kitten’s little life as we were,” Stray Rescue said on its website. “We cannot thank the St Louis Fire Department enough for the role they played today.”

Stray Rescue said the kitten, named Hook and Ladder, was in “rough shape” and brought in for treatment. Credit: Stray Rescue of St Louis via Storyful
