The head of Japan's Olympic committee on Thursday ruled out cancelling the Summer Games in Tokyo amid swirling doubts from medical and sports officials.

Seiko Hashimoto confirmed in an interview published by Nikkan Sports that Tokyo 2020 will go on as planned.

She said: “We cannot postpone again.”

Although, there will be restrictions in place.

Athletes can expect to be regularly tested and foreign spectators are barred from attending the events.

It’s yet to be decided if Japanese fans will be allowed into venues.

Public opinion polls in Japan have consistently shown that a majority want the Games cancelled - or, postponed for a second time.

Japan is battling a fourth wave of infections, just two months from the scheduled start of the Games.

Ten regions including Tokyo are under a state of emergency until near the end of this month.

The country’s vaccination rollout has also been slow, with only about 3 percent of the population inoculated.

Japan's Asahi Shimbun newspaper also reported Thursday that Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga is likely to call a snap election after the Games, showing his resolve to push ahead with the event.
