Lava Flows From Mauna Loa Toward Highway on Hawaii’s Big Island

Rivers of molten rock flowed from Mauna Loa, the world’s largest active volcano, toward a highway on Hawaii’s Big Island, the US Geological Survey said on Wednesday, November 30.

The edge of the lava flow pouring out of Mauna Loa was around 3.6 miles away from Saddle Road, also known as Daniel K. Inouye Highway, on Wednesday morning, according to the USGS.

The USGS also said it could take two days for the lava to reach the road, which connects the east and west sides of the island.

The advancing flows “are approaching a relatively flat area and will begin to slow down, spread out, and inflate,” the statement said.
