HBCU College Gymnastics Team Holds First-Ever Practice Session in Tennessee

A new women’s gymnastics team launched at Fisk University, a top historically black (HBCU) school in Tennessee, held its first-ever practice session, recent footage shows.

in February, Nashville’s Fisk University, one of the leading HBCUs in the US announced their first-ever women’s artistic gymnastic program.

In March, the university appointed Ivy League coach Corrinne Tarver to lead the gymnastics team. She was later promoted to Athletics Director in July.

“With her selection, Tarver is not only responsible for leading the first-ever HBCU gymnastics program but will also be the second woman in Fisk’s 156-year history hired to lead its athletic operations,” the university said.

Video posted by Zyia Coleman, a new freshman at Fisk, show scenes at the Clarksville gymnastics center on August 8.

“It was our first practice at a gym that’s letting us train there until our gym gets built,” Coleman told Storyful. When asked about upcoming competitions, Coleman told Storyful that plans were being made. “Coach Tarver is working on getting everything planned as we speak!” she said, and told local media she was “excited to be a part of history.” Credit: Zyia Coleman via Storyful
