A portion of a 150-year-old Cape Hatteras lighthouse fence that was uncovered by erosion in 2020 was once again revealed by strong waves from Hurricane Lee, the National Park Service said on Friday, September 15.

A portion of the fence foundation, which was built around 1870, was left in 1999 when the lighthouse was relocated, the National Park Service (NPS) said. The section of the fence that was revealed by erosion in 2020 was a “similar section” to the portion revealed by Hurricane Lee’s forceful waves, the NPS said.

The iconic Cape Hatteras Light Station had been moved inland to avoid shoreline erosion, according to local news reports.
