A man in Bishop Auckland, England, was arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty after officers found six newborn cocker spaniel puppies in a tightly sealed bag on his car’s front seat on Saturday, March 18, Durham Constabulary said.

The force said PCs Liam Vernon and Luke Howie were driving near Bishop Auckland on Saturday when they spotted a man “swinging a sealed carrier bag” on the edge of an embankment.

Officers stopped the man and heard squealing from the front seat, where they found the bag that the man had been swinging.

Upon opening the bag, officers found six five-day-old cocker spaniel puppies.

The man was arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty, money laundering, and trafficking a controlled drug. He has since been released on bail, the force said.

The puppies’ parents were found during a search of the man’s house, and the animal family was reunited at a local veterinarian’s office.

The puppies are expected to make a full recovery and “arrangements have already been made for the litter to go to a loving home,” police said. Credit: Durham Constabulary via Storyful
