Mauna Loa Eruption Decreased to Code Orange as Ash Emissions Lessen

The eruption of the Mauna Loa volcano in Hawaii was reduced from an aviation code red to a code orange on Sunday, December 4, due to decreased ash emissions.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said that although lava continues to flow from fissure 3 of Mauna Loa, the threat of volcanic ash emissions to aviation has lessened.

The fissure 3 lava flows are approximately 2.25 miles from the Daniel K Inouye Highway, according to the USGS, but the advancement rate has slowed significantly.

The USGS said it does not expect any eruptive activity outside the Northeast Rift Zone. Credit: United States Geological Survey via Storyful
