At least 300 people were injured and many were feared dead when a passenger train collided with derailed cars of another train in India’s Odisha state on Friday night, June 2, according to government officials.

Indian news media reported that at least 38 people were feared dead, though authorities had not released any official figures.

A large rescue operation was ongoing at the time of writing. This footage from India’s disaster response agency shows crews attempting to free survivors trapped inside the wreckage.

Odisha Chief Secretary Sri Pradeep Jena said a Coromandel Express train was traveling from Kolkata to Chennai when it crashed into the derailed cars of a freight train at Bahanaga, a community south of Balasore, at 7:20 pm. A second passenger train was also involved in the crash, Jena said.
