Satellite Images Show Extent of Destruction at Crimean Airbase

Satellite images taken on August 10 show the scale of destruction following explosions at the Saky airbase in Crimea the day before, in a suspected attack carried out by Ukrainian Armed Forces.

Pictures released by Maxar Technologies show both natural color and infrared images of the aftermath. Three nearly identical craters can be seen in the location of previous buildings at Russia’s Saky airbase.

In other images several burnt-out warplanes can be seen destroyed across the airfield. The infrared images show the extent of the area that was burned by the explosions and fires. Burned vegetation appears in shades of black and gray while unburned vegetation looks red or pink.

Ukraine has not publicly claimed responsibility for any attack or said how one was carried out.

Russia denied that the explosion was caused by shelling and said that equipment at the airbase remained undamaged. Credit: Maxar Technologies via Storyful
