STORY: Russian forces have been pounding the city for over a week killing civilians, and hitting apartment buildings and schools, regional authorities said.

Press spokesman of Kharkiv Emergency Services, Evgeni Vasilenko described the scene.

"The fire was put out in an hour, emergency ministry workers are on the site conducting emergency repair works, removing concrete stabs with cranes, clearing out rubble."

Local official, Yana Yakimenko said no one was hurt in explosion. "On the night of June 27-28, one of Kharkiv's educational institutions was turned into rubble. According to experts, Russian forces hit the building with two missiles. The building is badly damaged, luckily there have been no casualties. Children and staff are on vacation."

Russia renewed shelling of Kharkiv and the surrounding countryside in what Kyiv says is a bid to force Ukraine to pull resources from the main battlefield in Donbas to protect civilians from attack.

Kharkiv suffered heavy bombardment from the very start of the Russian invasion on February 24 which left much of the country's city of 1.5 million a wasteland of ruined buildings and debris.
