STORY: The streets of Vietnam's capital city Hanoi were enveloped in thick smog on Monday, March 4.

Levels of hazardous small airborne particles, known as PM2.5, were at 187 micrograms per cubic meter late in the day.

It was the highest among a list of most polluted international cities.

That's according to data from AirVisual, which provides independent global air pollution information via a phone app.

“I think Hanoi’s pollution is caused by a large number of personal vehicles and the fine dust from all the construction, plus this cold weather, all is very damaging for our health.”

A World Bank report from 2021 said emissions from Hanoi's 8 million registered vehicles made up 30% of air pollution.

Industry emissions contributed to another 30%.

Nearly 100 flights to and from Hanoi were delayed or diverted to other cities on February 2 due to heavy fog and worsening air pollution.
