A vigil was held in New York City’s Times Square on Tuesday, February 27, for Aaron Bushnell, a member of the US Air Force who died on Sunday after setting himself on fire outside the Israeli embassy in Washington in a protest over the war in Gaza,

The event was held by the Palestinian Youth Movement, which told attendees to gather at the US Armed Forces Recruiting Station in Times Square at 7 pm. The group held similar events in cities across the country.

This footage shows dozens of people rallying next to the recruitment station as rain poured down on Tuesday evening. A list said to show the names of thousands of people killed in Gaza was unfurled in the crowd and chants of “Free Palestine” could be heard, among others.

Before setting himself on fire, Bushnell filmed himself saying he would “no longer be complicit in genocide,” referring to the situation in Gaza. He then yelled “Free Palestine” several times as flames engulfed him. Credit: @datainput via Storyful
