A statue of colonial explorer Manuel de Borba Gato was set alight in Sao Paulo on July 24 as hundreds of anti-government demonstrations took place across Brazil.

This footage by Rafael Vilela of non-profit Mídia NINJA shows tyres piled on and around the burning statue.

Anti-establishment activist group Revolucao Periferica (Peripheral Revolution) claimed responsibility for the act, Brazilian media reported.

In the lead up to the fire, Revolucao Periferica posted a video showing people displaying posters in public places that asked, “Do you know who Borba Gato was?” Credit: Rafael Vilela via Storyful
