A strong earthquake hit Indonesia’s Sulawesi island on January 15, killing at least 42 people, the country’s National Disaster Management Agency said.

The Jakarta Post reported that thousands of residents fled their homes for higher ground when the 6.2-magnitude quake struck 6 km (3.7 miles) northeast of the town of Majene.

At least 300 homes and two hotels were destroyed, as well as a hospital and the office of a regional governor, Reuters said, citing local authorities.
