A Queensland-based bat carer captured footage of a baby bat as it attempted to hang upside down while still latching onto its mother.

The footage was posted to YouTube on June 4 by Denise Wade, who has been caring for injured baby bats for more than a decade.

Speaking from behind the camera in the footage, Wade comments that the youngster is “starting to learn to hang a bit more independently while still hanging on to mum’s nipple.”

In the video caption, Wade explains that baby bats spend a lot of time attached to their mother’s nipples, which are located in each wing pit.

“It’s not uncommon to see baby stretching, flapping and even attempting to travel in the opposite direction whilst still latched on,” she said.

Attending to the injured bats at her home in Rochedale South, Wade regularly shares updates on the animals to her Batzilla the Bat YouTube and Facebook pages. Credit: Batzilla the Bat via Storyful
