A New South Wales grandmother with dementia was treated to an in-house shopping experience to help her to adapt to going outside after spending almost three months in lockdown due to COVID-19.

The van Genderen family, from Forresters Beach, went out and purchased some clothes they thought 87-year-old Hendrika van Genderen, who has Alzheimers disease and Vascular Dementia, would like, and set up a “Oma’s boutique”, inside their home.

New South Wales authorities introduced new measures to ease COVID-19 lockdown restrictions in mid-May, allowing public gatherings of up to 10 people, while businesses were also permitted to host a maximum of 10 people, provided social distancing was observed.

“In the coming weeks all the restrictions are getting lifted a bit and we realise that we need to get Oma ready as well to get out of the house,” Hendrika’s son Jason can be heard saying in a video shared online.

In the video, a thrilled Hendrika can be seen browsing through the selection of clothes her family has set up for her and trying out the pieces for colour and size in the mirror before dressing in the home-made ‘fitting room’.

The ‘store manager’ then assists Hendrika ‘pay’ for her items at the till, ensuring to remind her that “all these items are on special”.
