Travelers were left stranded at airports in South Africa on Saturday, November 27, as countries around the world announced travel bans affecting the region following the emergence of a new coronavirus strain.

On Sunday, the World Health Organization said that “Preliminary evidence suggests there may be an increased risk of reinfection with Omicron.” But the WHO cautioned that any potential impact of the strain, known as Omicron, remains unclear without further study.

The UK and several other European countries announced bans against travelers from Southern Africa, and US restrictions for South Africa and seven other countries will come into effect on Monday.
