Two men were rescued by the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue unit on Monday, September 26, after their plane crashed near Lake Cavanaugh in Washington the evening before.

Two brothers, a 78-year-old pilot and 79-year-old passenger, walked about a mile to a clearing in the woods after their plane came down, according to information from the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office.

The plane left Concrete airport at approximately 2 pm on Sunday but did not arrive when it was expected in Snohomish.

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) flew a plane over the area Sunday evening and picked up a locator beacon signal near Lake Cavanaugh at around midnight.

On Monday morning, WSDOT sent out a rescue helicopter and found the plane’s crash site in a heavily wooded area near Lake Cavanaugh. The brothers called “mayday” on a radio when they heard the helicopter over them, and directed the rescue team to their location.

The men were hoisted out of the woods and transported to Taylor’s Landing, where they were evaluated by medics and greeted by their family members. Neither of the men were seriously injured. Credit: Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office via Storyful
