King Charles received a standing ovation after his address, in German and English, to the German Bundestag in Berlin, on Thursday, March 30, during his first trip abroad since becoming monarch.

Charles gave thanks for the invitation and expressing his pleasure at the continuing friendship between the two countries.

The monarch then thanked Germany for its “extraordinary kindness” when his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, died in September.

Charles continued to celebrate the cultural and historical bonds between the UK and Germany, eliciting laughter and applause when he touched on the English Women’s Euros victory against Germany in 2022.

“Naturally there is also rivalry. I am thinking particularly of encounters between our football teams. Given our history it was a special occasion when the English Women’s team – the Lionesses – became European Champions following a win against Germany,” Charles said.

The king also touched on climate leadership, pointing out that the UK and Germany are European leaders in off-shore wind.

He finished his address to a standing ovation after talking about the future relationship between the two countries. “In the long and remarkable story of our countries, there are many chapters not yet written. Let us fill these with the restless pursuit of a better tomorrow,” he said.
