Kitten Rescued After Spending Days in Phoenix Storm Drain

A six-week-old kitten was saved from a storm drain in Phoenix, Arizona, on December 2, after multiple efforts by officials, with rescuers saying the cat was in the sewer for more than a week.

The Phoenix Fire Department said “multiple calls were received” about “meowing” coming from an underground pipe at the corner of 20th Street and Indian School Road. A crew from Phoenix Fire Station 61 teamed up with the Arizona Humane Society (AHS) to remove the kitten, but for two days he evaded rescue attempts, the AHS said in a press release.

The cat was eventually rescued using a “humane trap to help lure him to safety,” the AHS said.

The animal rescue organization said the cat was “safe and sound” and was “recovering in AHS’ animal trauma hospital after reportedly having been trapped in the storm drain for more than a week.”

The kitten was found to be “underweight, with fleas and a tummy ailment that will need treatment in an AHS Foster Hero home, where he can also get some much-needed socialization and love,” the AHS added. “It is expected he will need a couple weeks of medical care to get up to weight and healthy enough to be up for adoption,” they said.
