Ash from the Cumbre Vieja volcano led to a suspension of flights in La Palma by the Canary Islands flag carrier Binter for a period on November 3, while the local council warned of poor air quality in some areas close to the eruption.

Towards evening on November 3, the council said sulfur dioxide levels were decreasing and air quality was good for “most of the island.” It recommended people in the Valle de Aridane continue to wear masks and stay indoors.

Binter said flights began operating again at 3 pm local time.

Several schools, however, were to remain closed on November 4.

The lava flow had destroyed 2,613 buildings and reached 997.9 hectares as of November 2, according to the European Union’s Copernicus radar program.
