Military personnel patrolled the streets of Goma, Democratic Republic of the Congo, on Tuesday, February 7, a day after protests against perceived inaction by the East African Community (EAC) against a rebel insurgency, local media reported.

Radio Okapi reported demonstrators still held strategic corners of the city on Tuesday after protesting the day before. Public transport had not yet resumed as some roads were blocked by obstacles, the outlet reported.

Police had attempted to disperse protesters using tear gas on Monday, Radio Okapi reported.

The head of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo Bintou Keita condemned “the violence that occurred on the sidelines of the demonstrations”, according to a machine translation.

Video released by the Governorate of North Kivu on Tuesday shows soldiers from the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Goma streets “in order to reassure the population of the city of Goma on its presence,” it said.
