Mourners lined the streets of Citrus Heights, California, to remember Marine Sgt Nicole Gee on September 16. Gee was one of 13 US service members killed in an attack at Kabul airport on August 26.

The attack left more than 170 people dead, and hundreds wounded.

Gee, a 23-year-old sergeant from Roseville, California, posted a picture of herself holding an Afghan infant on August 20. “I love my job,” she said in the caption.

After her death, she was celebrated as a hero in her hometown, local news said. A GoFundMe page set up to cover funeral expenses had reached $195,000 as of September 17.

Gee’s body was escorted from Sacramento International Airport to the Mt Vernon Memorial Park and Mortuary in Fair Oaks, according to ABC 10.
