France’s outgoing foreign minister, Jean-Yves Le Drian, welcomed the defeat of Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison at a press conference in Paris on May 21.

Le Drian, who is leaving his post after five years said, “I can’t stop myself from saying that the defeat of Morrison suits me very well."

The minister’s comments came after Australia scrapped a submarine deal between the two countries last September, in favor of securing a pact with the US and the UK.

“The actions taken at the moment… were of such brutality and cynicism and I would even be tempted to say of unequivocal incompetence." Le Drian said.

Le Drian added that he hoped that the French government “can resume frank and constructive dialogue with Australia in the future.” Credit: Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs via Storyful
