Yahoo TV Police Warn of 'Micro-Sleep' Dangers as Dashcam Shows Crash
Dashcam footage released by Western Australia Police shows the moment a driver fell asleep at the wheel and crashed into a tree, with police using the dramatic incident to warn of the dangers of driving while fatigued.
In an accompanying Facebook post, police said the driver narrowly avoided oncoming traffic and crashed into a tree. Luckily, no one was seriously injured.
The crash took place on October 30, when a 54-year-old fell asleep for a brief moment while driving on Albany Highway in Crossman, 7 News reported.
“When you are driving tired, you can drift in and out of sleep for a few seconds without realising. This is called micro-sleep and is the main cause of fatigue-related crashes,” police said.
“A micro-sleep of five seconds at 110km/h is like travelling the length of an Aussie rules football field with your eyes closed,” they added. Credit: Western Australia Police Force via Storyful
