Thousands of people took part in a demonstration in the city’s center on December 4, after Victoria passed new pandemic legislation.

Demonstrators met near Melbourne’s parliament and marched to the nearby treasury gardens, according to ABC News.

The demonstration occurred after it was announced that Victoria would become the first Australian state to pass legislation specifically for the occurrence of a pandemic, according to 9 News. The new pandemic laws will come into effect on December 16, giving the Premier and Health Minister of Victoria the power to declare a pandemic and issue health orders.
