United States President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris spoke at the White House, on April 20, after jurors returned a guilty verdict on all three charges against former police officer Derek Chauvin, on trial for the death of George Floyd.

In an address live streamed on Twitter, President Biden said that the systemic racism that led to Floyd’s death was a “stain on our nation’s soul”.

“It was a murder in the full light of day and it ripped the blinders off for the whole world to see the systemic racism the Vice President just referred to, the systemic racism is a stain on our nation’s soul. The murder of George Floyd launched a summer of protest, unified people of every race and nation to say enough,” he said.

Vice President Harris called for more action on racial injustice saying, “Black men are fathers and brothers and sons and uncles and grandfathers and friends and neighbours. Their lives must be valued in our education system, in our health care system, in our housing system, in our economics system, in our criminal justice system.”

Chauvin was tried on charges of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter. The former officer was seen on video kneeling on Floyd’s neck for more than nine minutes as Floyd pled for air. Credit: President Joe Biden via Storyful
