The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) delivered aid to villages near Bakhmut, Ukraine, on March 16, amid heavy fighting in the area.

Footage from the ICRC shows aid deliveries in several villages including Konstyantynivka and Chasiv Yar.

Anna Golubtsova, the ICRC representative for the Bakhmut area of Donetsk, said aid deliveries to the area, which has seen heavy fighting, had been difficult but necessary.

“A lot of people from Bakhmut have fled to different parts of our country,” Golubtsova said, “More than 200 families are here, in Kostiantynivka, including children, which equals almost 500 people. They need hygiene items and food.”

Several residents also spoke of the difficulty of accessing food and hygiene items.

Daniil, a 19-year-old from Novodmitrovka, said: "We have a lot of elderly people. They really need humanitarian help, especially because they have low pensions. This help is very important.

“There is only one shop for several villages here, but it’s difficult for locals to visit it, especially the elderly,” Daniil said.

Achille Despres, ICRC spokesman for Ukraine, said the organization had delivered 2,000 food and hygiene parcels alone to the village of Selydove on March 16, where hundreds of civilians still lived. Credit: ICRC via Storyful
