The eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano continues to take its toll on the Spanish island of La Palma, with El Pais reporting on September 23 that lava from the crater had destroyed 400 buildings and was endangering many more.

Thousands of people have been evacuated, and firefighters have been attempting by various means to divert the damaging flow of lava away from houses, local media said.

Eruption activity at Cumbre Vieja began on September 19, with these satellite images from Maxar showing the volcano on September 21.

Maxar said a blended image shows the erupting volcano, taken at night. They edited it onto an earlier daytime image to show the location. Imagery prior to the eruption was taken on August 17, Maxar said. Credit: Satellite image ©2021 Maxar Technologies via Storyful
