Smoke from hundreds of wildfires burning in Canada lingered in the northeastern United States’ atmosphere on Tuesday, June 6, posing a health risk, officials warned.

Storyful editor Rob McDonagh shot this footage of the New York City skyline from Brooklyn on Tuesday evening as it was enveloped by a smoky haze.

Air quality had “plummeted across much of the northeast” as the smoke drifted south, the National Weather Service (NWS) said. “Poor air quality can be hazardous to anyone, and it can aggravate health problems such as asthma, heart disease, and lung disease,” the agency warned.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul issued an Air Quality Health Advisory for large swathes of the state, including New York City, and the New York City Mayor’s Office advised people with heart or breathing issues to limit outdoor activities “to the absolute necessities.” Credit: Rob McDonagh via Storyful
