Evacuations were ordered for communities in California’s Sequoia National Forest late on September 22 as the Windy Fire began to threaten the Camp Nelson area.

The Windy Fire was an estimated 36,249 acres in size and considered 6 percent contained, according to firefighting authorities.

The fire moved into Long Meadow Grove, damaging a sequoia tree known as the Bench Tree, and threatening others, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The grove is home to the Trail of 100 Giants, which includes trees that are around 1,500 years old.
