A large “thank you” sign was installed across the street from Elmhurst Hospital in Queens, New York, one of the overwhelmed hospitals in the heart of New York City’s coronavirus pandemic.

Local media reported that Staten Island artist Scott LoBaido has been installing “thank you” signs across from hospitals throughout New York City’s five boroughs as a show of support for the city’s health care workers.

Skylar Liberty Rose, who filmed footage of the sign on April 1, said Queens has been “shutting down more and more each day.”

“It’s hard to explain what living here is like since the pandemic hit,” Rose said on Instagram. “I hear sirens in my sleep and I can’t tell if they’re real or not. By day, they definitely are.”

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced on March 31 that a new temporary hospital would be set up at Billie Jean King Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, Queens, to help accommodate the flood of patients to Elmhurst Hospital. The temporary facility, slated to hold 350 patients, will begin treating certain COVID-19 patients by April 7.

Officials have also sent a “surge” of resources to Elmhurst, including 169 various medical professionals, and thousands of masks, head covers, and other protective equipment.

As of April 2, the city said there were 16,336 COVID-19 cases in Queens. Credit: @awomanintheworld via Storyful
