Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) announced that it had detained a Japanese diplomat on Monday, September 26, for espionage activities.

The FSB said Motoki Tatsunori, Consul of the Consulate General of Japan in Vladivostok, was declared persona non grata after he was caught receiving classified information about Russia’s cooperation with another country and “the impact of Western sanctions” on the Primorsky Krai district.

According to The Moscow Times, Tatsunori was ordered to leave the country within 48 hours, and the Russian foreign ministry had lodged a protest with Tokyo through diplomatic channels.

Footage released by the FSB purportedly shows Tatsunori receiving a document from an anonymous individual and later being questioned about his actions. Credit: Federal Security Service (FSB) via Storyful
