A plume of dust from the Sahara Desert that reached Texas lingered in the sky this week, creating a vivid sunset on Wednesday, July 26, the National Weather Service Austin-San Antonio said.

These plumes from the “Saharan Air Layer” occur when dusty air from the Sahara Desert moves across the Atlantic Ocean, the NWS said.

“The dust can cause vivid sunsets and sunrises and a milky white appearance to the sky in the middle of the day,” the NWS said.
