Satellite imagery captured a swirl of wildfire smoke in the atmosphere over the northwestern United States on Tuesday, September 3.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said the swirl formed when wildfire smoke got wrapped up in an area of low-pressure air.

According to the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC), wildfires burned more than 6.4 million acres of land across the US in 2024 as of September. Credit: NOAA Satellites via Storyful
