STORY: Bakhmut, of Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region, is now seeing heavy fighting, as Russian forces persist in attempts to make advances.

With the sound of mortar shelling and artillery firing booming in the background, dozens of local residents climbed over the ruins of a destroyed bridge just to reach a collection point on the opposite side of the river on Sunday morning.

"It's very bad. They (Russian troops) started to batter us a lot. The most frightening was — and this is really scary — when they shell the place where me and my friend Sergiy are staying now. That shelling is no joke. It is very scary when airplanes are in the air, and you hear that they don't fire missiles but drop air bombs. And then the next morning, we see the consequences," local construction worker, Bohdan, said.

The town of Bakhmut has been the target of Russia's armed forces in their slow advance through the Donetsk region since taking the key industrial towns of Lysychansk and Sievierodonetsk in June and July.
